MrCheckpoint exists to promote transparency, public awareness, and safer interactions between the public and law enforcement by publishing timely, location-based checkpoint information and educational resources.
Driving under the influence is dangerous and continues to cause serious harm. According to national traffic safety data, alcohol-impaired driving is involved in roughly one out of every three traffic fatalities in the United States, resulting in more than 10,000 deaths each year. Beyond fatalities, DUI crashes lead to countless injuries, permanent disabilities, and long-term consequences for families and communities. Public awareness and informed decision-making play a critical role in reducing these preventable harms.
Publishing DUI checkpoint information benefits the public by increasing transparency and encouraging safer choices. When drivers know checkpoints are planned, they are more likely to use a designated driver, rideshare, or avoid impaired driving altogether. Public visibility also helps ensure accountability by making enforcement activity open and subject to public scrutiny.
MrCheckpoint also emphasizes knowing your constitutional rights during police encounters. Under the First Amendment, individuals generally have the right to record police officers performing their duties in public spaces, so long as it does not interfere with their work. Under the Fourth Amendment, individuals have the right to refuse consent to searches. Under the Fifth Amendment, individuals have the right to remain silent, but this right must be clearly invoked. A commonly used invocation is: “I am exercising my right to remain silent and I want to speak with a lawyer.”
