Three years after a catastrophic detonation of illegal fireworks in South L.A., relief is finally on the horizon for displaced residents. The Los Angeles City Council has sanctioned a significant multi-million dollar settlement for those forced from their homes.
On Tuesday, the L.A. City Council approved a $21 million settlement for residents impacted by the LAPD’s mishandling of illegal fireworks three years ago. In June 2021, the LAPD bomb squad’s detonation of the fireworks on 27th Street resulted in a massive explosion that injured 17 people, damaged 35 buildings, and displaced dozens of residents.
The settlement includes continued housing at the hotel until February and allocates $848,000 towards a new community fund. However, the exact distribution of the $21 million remains unclear.
L.A. City Councilman Curran Price acknowledged the prolonged process, stating, “The incident should never have happened and was entirely preventable. The LAPD has learned from this disaster and has taken every necessary step to prevent such tragedies from occurring ever again.”
This significant settlement marks a critical step towards justice and recovery for the affected residents.
