Giovanni Ceja, a former Texas Sheriff out of Bexar County, is being charged for the death of a Lake Elsinore man. The hit and run occurred on the 215 freeway in Riverside, and Ceja is accused of driving while intoxicated.
Ceja ran his car into the victim, Gilberto Sotelo, his truck while he was stopped on the side of the road refilling his gas tank, and then Ceja proceeded to drive away. Unfortunately, Gilberto Sotelo’s wife and one of his children were waiting nearby in a different car when they saw him being hit.
Giovanni Ceja has been charged with second-degree murder and hit and run involving death. He was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center on August 27th, and his next court date is set for January 30, 2024, after he entered a not-guilty plea at his arraignment earlier this month.
Ceja was a corporal for Bexar County since 2018 but resigned in lieu of termination and was dishonorably discharged.
