Former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer Henry Chapman has been caught on body cam stealing $900 from a man he had arrested for an outstanding warrant. The shocking incident occurred in March, as Chapman concealed the cash inside his patrol car. When the arrested man arrived back at the station, he accused Officer Chapman of stealing some of the cash he had on him. One officer continued asking how much cash should be there, and the man in handcuffs stared at Officer Chapman, announcing his every move.
The man convinced other officers to check Chapman’s car, where they found what the man said was missing, around $1,000 still inside it. Initially, Chapman denied knowing the money was there, but body camera footage captured the theft. Chapman later admitted to taking the money but claimed he did not intend to steal it. He was subsequently charged with one count of embezzlement and has since resigned from his position.
This case underscores the critical need for transparency and accountability within law enforcement.
