The worst part is, Las Cruces Police (LCPD) still arrested and formally charged him with multiple bogus charges. And let’s not forget the fact that he had his hands in the air when they were shooting at him. Let’s dive right in!
In a shocking incident on Thursday, March 11, 2021, Las Cruces police officers fired around 100 bullets at an unarmed black man named Jonathan Strickland. Miraculously, he survived. Strickland had his hands in the air when the police kept shooting.

During the PRESS RELEASE, where the lawsuit was announced, it was revealed that Jonathan Strickland survived a horrific display of violence by five Las Cruces Police Department officers on March 11, 2021.

You can/should reach out to Raul Torrez, New Mexico Attorney General, and Gerald Byers, Las Cruces District Attorney, and demand they terminate the officers involved and press charges.
These officers, entrusted to uphold the law, fired over 90 rounds at an unarmed man who had committed no crime (Let’s not forget, he had his hands up in the air!).
His then-wife, with a history of making false reports, accused Jonathan of assaulting her and planning a shootout with the police. The officers acted on this unsubstantiated accusation without conducting a thorough investigation. Later, his now ex-wife recanted her story and admitted to fabricating the story.

There’s an article you may want to check out, it was written by Justin Garcia, and it’s titled ‘Reminded me of Rodney King.’ A Las Cruces man shot 12 times by the LCPD is suing the city, alleging racist discrimination. It was posted on the Las Cruces Sun News website, and can be summarized into the following bullet points:
- An unarmed Black man named Jonathan Strickland survived a shooting incident involving the Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD), during which approximately 100 bullets were fired at him.
- Civil Rights attorney John Burris, known for representing Rodney King in the 1990s, drew parallels between this incident and the Rodney King case.

- Dr. Bobbie Green, president of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), strongly criticized the LCPD and highlighted the ongoing suffering that Strickland would endure.
- An attorney representing the City of Las Cruces, Luis Robles, responded to the allegations in the lawsuit, refuting claims of a culture of police brutality. He argued that Strickland’s actions during the incident led the officers to believe he was armed and posed a threat.
