The 84 people covered by the settlement over their arrest during the 2017 protest have received their share of the $4.9M settlement that the city agreed to. As part of the settlement, the city was able to deny any of their wrongdoings.
They were protesting over the acquittal of the officer who shot and killed Antony Lamar Smith. There were claims that the officers used excessive force and even pepper sprayed bystanders who weren’t part of the protest.
Since the protest, the city of St. Louis has paid out over $10M because of the actions of the officers. The officers assaulted a black undercover officer, Luther Hall, because they thought he was a protester. Hall ended up with a $5M payout. They also beat and pepper sprayed a Kansas City filmmaker, who received a $115k settlement.
