Jacobo Juarez Cedillo passed away in 2019 after he was detained by officers who used excessive force. His daughter, Nicole Juarez Zelaya, was just awarded a $13.5 million verdict after the jury made the unanimous decision to hold LA and the officers involved, responsible for his death. All Cedillo was doing was sitting on a sidewalk, and was cuffed without having committed a crime.
He had told the officers that he was waiting for the bus and wasn’t feeling well. When they tried to search him, there was a struggle, and that is when they detained him with excessive force.
When Zelaya filed the lawsuit, she claimed that the officers were restricting her father’s breathing when they handcuffed him and restrained him on the ground using their full body weight, and kept him there for almost five minutes.
Cedillo went unconscious during that time and was then woken up, only to be put face down again until he became unresponsive.
Cedillo then died at the hospital five days later. He died from cardiopulmonary arrest, loss of blood flow to the brain, and effects of methamphetamine.
